Notes: On Thursday, April 29, 2004, the CBS program "60 Minutes II" showed the photographs seen 'round the world. Of course, I'm speaking of the photographs of torture of Iraqi prisoners at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had just appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee without mentioning the photographs as had others from the Pentagon. Thus, committee members learned of the travesty through "60 Minutes II" just like you and I did. Committee chair Sen. John Warner and committee member Sen. John McCain were furious.

The Bush administrations' notorious secrecy -- anathema to democracy -- is coming home to roost. I'm one angry American at how our stature has been diminished around the world. Tellingly, the U.S. did not release its annual report on human rights for fear of world-wide ridicule. Remember when we thought it was the backwards countries who used torture.
