Notes: On January 9, Linda Chavez withdrew her name from consideration as President-elect George W. Bush's selection for labor secretary. Her troubles arose when it came to light that an illegal alien had lived with her and performed domestic chores while receiving spending money. Chavez apparently had failed to disclose this during her vetting process. No one from the Bush camp appeared at her news conference when she announced her withdrawal. Two other Cabinet nominees -- John Ashcroft for attorney general and Gail Norton for interior secretary -- face there own survival tests this week. 01.14.01
